Solution Name: FAITH – Fair Analytics and Traceability in Fabric
Target Challenge: Developing sustainable finishing processes for high-performing fabrics and/or analytical techniques to enable fabric traceability.
FAITH, Fabric AI cybervision for Fair Analytics and Traceability.

Solution Description
FAITH, Fair Analytics and Traceability in Fabric project employs an integrated approach using computer vision to simultaneously address both sustainability assessment and material traceability within the textile industry. The overarching technological solution harmonizes two principal functionalities: spectral-textural feature analysis for sustainability metrics and optically readable tagging for real-time traceability. Key aspects of FAITH’s technology include:
- a) Spectral-Textural Analysis: At the initial stages of production, each fabric batch undergoes spectral imaging, capturing multi-band images to identify the chemical composition and texture. Specific wavelengths and patterns provide data correlated with sustainability factors such as material source, chemical usage, and energy consumed during the finishing process.
- b) Machine Learning: A convolutional neural network (CNN), pre-trained on a dataset of fabrics with known sustainability metrics, interprets these spectral and textural features. The algorithm generates a comprehensive sustainability score based on multiple factors.
- c) Optical Tagging and Imaging: Each fabric batch is tagged with a non-intrusive, optically readable ink that responds to specific wavelengths of light. Cameras at strategic points in the manufacturing and distribution process capture images of these tags.
d) Real-time Identification and Traceability: Another specialized computer vision algorithm identifies these tags and reconciles them with the batch data and sustainability score, in a scalable database. This information is made available in real-time to supply chain managers, allowing for instantaneous tracking and verification. This integrated computer vision-based solution thus serves a dual purpose. It provides a data-driven sustainability assessment while simultaneously enabling real-time material traceability. By adopting this unified technological approach, the FAITH project offers a coherent, advanced, and scalable framework that meets the critical textile industry requirements for both sustainability and traceability.
