This innovator got selected for Phase 2!

Solution Name: FeatherGAS – Fossil fuel replacement through poultry litter Green Alternative Solutions.

Target Challenge:

Development of a sustainable solution for the on-site valorisation of solid waste from poultry farms (Two in one – Challenge brought by the consortium).

Demonstration of a pilot, small-scale, waste-to-energy system which utilizes chicken litter to produce renewable energy on-site.

Solution Description

The FeatherGAS project centers around the on-site valorisation of poultry litter, the primary waste stream of poultry farms. Poultry litter is a mixture of manure, spilled feed, feathers and bedding materials. By means of BIO2CHP’s proprietary, small-scale gasification technology, it can be converted to fuel gas which can either be burnt directly to cover the heating needs of poultry farms, or utilized in a CHP system to produce heat and electricity on-site. The proposed solution aims to encourage poultry farms to rethink the current byproduct-handling processes and to treat poultry litter as a potential opportunity to produce clean, renewable energy, instead of viewing it as waste. This will not only promote the sector’s decarbonisation and reduce its reliance on fossil fuels for heat and electricity, but it will also reduce the volume of poultry-farm waste resulting on the ground, which have been linked to ground pollution and under-ground water contamination. Through the FeatherGAS project, a pilot waste-to-energy system which will utilize chicken-litter from a Greek poultry farm is going to be tested and demonstrated in an operational environment.
