PONTOS
Solution Name: PONTOS
Target Challenge:
- Developing tools to improve and increase farmers online visibility to potential customers.
- Developing a solution that supports the pre-ordering and sale of seasonal products in close surroundings.
PONTOS envisions transforming the artisanal fisheries sector by fostering direct connections between fisherfolk and consumers, thereby reinforcing trust and promoting transparency within the seafood value chain. By leveraging real-time data and traceability technologies, our solution aims to empower fisherfolk with knowledge about sustainable practices, market demands, and environmental stewardship. We see a future where the sector shifts towards a community-centric model, prioritizing ecosystem health, fair trade, and the well-being of coastal communities.
Solution Description
PONTOS serves as a bridge that connects artisanal fisherfolk directly with their consumers through transparent, traceable, and real-time data sharing.
Inspired by ongoing development work at the French National Institute for Research in Digital Science and Technology, INRIA, PONTOS aims to transform the artisanal maritime fishing sector through innovation, accessibility of technology and a commitment to sustainability.
To this end, it proposes an integrated platform dedicated to providing the analyses that small scale companies exploiting fishery resources need to make informed decisions.
Furthermore, Pontos aims to provide seafood companies with the digital tool that allows them to prove the origin of their catches and to prevent economic, social, and environmental risks of their supply chain through the joint analysis of multiple types of data.
The solution will encourage the adoption of circular economy principles within the sector, such as the utilization of by-catch and reducing waste through better planning and market matching. Environmental benefits include reduced overfishing and habitat destruction, while social impacts encompass enhanced food security, economic resilience for coastal communities, and improved consumer awareness and engagement in sustainable practices.
Our vision is for the fisheries sector to evolve into a more sustainable, equitable, and transparent system. This includes a transition from industrial fishing practices to sustainable methods that ensure fish stocks’ longevity, a reduction in waste and carbon footprint, and the empowerment of local communities through fair economic opportunities.
